I worked as a senior engineer at one of the world's largest social media platforms for eight years. I helped build the infrastructure that stores, processes, and (supposedly) deletes user data.
I'm creating this time-locked capsule because I want there to be a record. I can't speak publicly while I'm still bound by NDAs and non-disparagement agreements. But in six months, those restrictions expire.
Here's what I want you to know:
"DELETED" DOESN'T MEAN DELETED
When you delete a post, a photo, a message, or your entire account, here's what actually happens:
- The content is marked as "inactive" in the primary database
- It remains fully accessible to internal employees for a minimum of 90 days
- Backup systems retain copies for 7+ years
- Machine learning models trained on your data retain the patterns permanently
- Advertising profiles derived from your content are NEVER deleted
THE "ANONYMIZATION" IS A JOKE
We claim to anonymize data before sharing with partners. The anonymization process is so weak that re-identification is trivial for any competent data scientist. We know this. Legal knows this. We do it anyway because the letter of the law has been satisfied.
THE REAL PRODUCT
You've heard that "if you're not paying, you're the product." It's worse than that. You're not the product. Your psychological vulnerabilities are the product. We don't just show you ads. We build predictive models of when you're most emotionally vulnerable, and we time content delivery to maximize engagement during those windows.
WHY I STAYED SO LONG
The money. The stock options. The prestige. The fear that speaking out would make me unemployable.
I'm not proud of that.
WHY I'M SPEAKING NOW
Because my kids are approaching the age where they'll start using these platforms. And I can't look them in the eye if I don't at least try to tell the truth.
When this unlocks, I'll be doing interviews. I'll name names. I'll provide documentation.
The public has a right to know how their data is really being used.
