Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about how SupaProof works.
Every Capsule creates a proof record. Part of that proof is a unique SHA-256 cryptographic hash generated from its message content at the moment of creation. This hash acts as a digital fingerprint.
Why it matters:When a capsule unlocks, anyone can verify that the revealed content matches the original hash. This proves the message wasn't altered between creation and reveal. You can independently verify this using any SHA-256 tool.
Note: The hash is informational and provides a transparency mechanism. It is not a cryptographic guarantee of tamper-proofing the database itself.
Labels are automatically assigned based on timing and engagement metrics. They help surface interesting capsules.
For Locked Capsules:
- Opening imminent: Unlocks within 10 minutes
- Within 24 hours: Unlocks within the next day
- High anticipation: Top 10% by watch count among locked capsules
- Epic wait: Top 10% by total wait time (time from creation to unlock)
For Unlocked Capsules:
- Just unlocked: Opened within the last hour
- Recently unlocked: Opened within the last 24 hours
- Popular: Top 10% by watch count among unlocked capsules
- Long-awaited: Was in top 10% by wait time before unlocking
For Both:
- Highly discussed: Top 10% by comment count
Groups allow multiple people to create capsules that all unlock together at the same moment. This creates a shared reveal experience—everyone's content is revealed simultaneously when the unlock time arrives.
Groups are ideal for predictions, competitions, challenges, game nights, and any scenario where you want synchronized reveals with others.
Go to the Groups pageand click "Create Group." Set a title, optional description, and the unlock time when all capsules will be revealed together.
After creating the group, you'll receive a unique group keythat you can share with others to invite them to participate. Save this key—it won't be shown again.
You can also choose whether the group is public (anyone can submit) or private (key required to submit).
There are three ways to join a group:
- Group key:Enter the key in the "Join Group" modal on the Groups page
- Shared link: Click a join link shared by the group creator
- Public groups:Submit directly from the group's page (no key required)
Once you join, you can submit your capsule to the group. Your capsule will unlock along with all others when the group's unlock time arrives.
A group key is a unique code (like ABCD-EFGH-1234-5678) that grants access to a private group. The creator receives this key when the group is created and can share it with intended participants.
Important: The key is only shown once at creation. If you lose it, you cannot recover it.
For public groups, the key is optional—anyone can submit directly from the group page without it.
Public groups: Anyone can view the group page and submit a capsule directly. No key is required to participate. Good for open competitions or community events.
Private groups: Anyone can view the group page, but submitting requires the group key or a shared join link. Good for friend groups, controlled competitions, or exclusive events.
When a group unlocks, all capsules are revealed simultaneously and displayed in a randomised order. The order is determined at submission time (not at reveal), so it's unpredictable but consistent.
This ensures fairness—no one gets positional advantage based on when they submitted. Everyone's reveal happens at the same moment.
The Featured sort option shows capsules ranked by a combination of engagement signals: watch count, comment count, and recency. It's designed to surface capsules that are generating interest from the community.
Featured is not manually curated. It's algorithmically determined based on public engagement data.
Watching a capsule signals your interest in its future reveal. It's a way of saying "I want to see what's inside when this unlocks."
Watch counts are public and contribute to labels like "High anticipation" and "Popular." They also influence the Featured ranking.
Currently, watching is a social signal only. You won't receive a notification when the capsule unlocks. Notification features may be added in a future update.
Note: You can only watch locked capsules. Once a capsule unlocks, the watch count is frozen and reflects total interest accumulated before the reveal.
No. Comments are only available on unlocked capsules. This is intentional: you can only discuss the contents after they've been revealed.
Like capsules themselves, comments are public and permanent once submitted.
Yes. By default, Capsules are anonymous. You can optionally verify your identity via X (Twitter) for verified authorship.
SupaProof does not require accounts. Without X verification, there is no way to prove you created a specific Capsule.
When you create a capsule, the unlock time you select is interpreted in your local time zone (based on your browser). The capsule will unlock at that exact moment in time, displayed in each viewer's local time zone.
The unlock time must be in the future. You cannot create a capsule that unlocks immediately. There is currently no maximum limit, so you can set unlock dates years or decades into the future.
To prevent spam and abuse, SupaProof limits how frequently you can perform certain actions. These limits are based on your IP address and reset automatically.
Current limits:
- Creating capsules: 5 per hour, 20 per day
- Creating groups: 10 per day
- Posting comments: 10 per hour, 50 per day
- Group key lookups: 10 per minute, 100 per day
- Generating join links: 10 per hour
These limits are designed to be generous for normal use. If you hit a limit, simply wait for the time window to reset.
Group creators can set limits on who can submit capsules. If you're seeing a submission error, it may be due to one of these settings:
Possible reasons:
- Group is full: The group has reached its maximum number of submissions set by the creator.
- Per-person limit reached:You've already submitted the maximum allowed capsules to this group.
- Submissions closed: The submission deadline has passed (before the unlock time).
- Group already unlocked: You cannot submit to a group that has already revealed its capsules.
These limits are set by group creators to control participation. They are separate from the system-wide rate limits.
Capsule messages are plain text only. No HTML, Markdown, links, or images are supported. This is intentional—it keeps the focus on the message itself and reduces security risks.
URLs typed as plain text will be displayed as-is but will not be clickable.
No. Capsules cannot be edited or deleted once created. This is a core design principle: permanence ensures commitments mean something.
Think carefully before creating a capsule. Review your content thoroughly before submitting.
SupaProof uses Supabase for database storage and Vercel for hosting. Your capsule content is stored in a secure cloud database. All capsule content is public by design.
IP addresses are temporarily processed for rate limiting and automatically deleted within approximately 24 hours.
Lock duration is the total time between when a capsule was created and when it unlocks (or unlocked). It represents how long the author committed to waiting.
This is different from "time until unlock," which shows the countdown to the reveal.
SupaProof works in all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. JavaScript must be enabled. The interface is responsive and works on mobile devices.
